Nothing is nothing. Something is something.

“If I vote or not, it makes no difference at all. I won’t bother,” says a friend upon the question what they think the outcome of the upcoming election will be. They won’t vote. Lots of people thought that now we have demos asking for a second referendum around Brexit.

“Sorry, you lost something,” says an older lady to another person on the street as they dropped a tissue. The person walked off saying, “Everything is dirty anyway.” Imagine everyone who dropped something would pick it up and put it in the next bin.

I am on holiday in Cornwall, walking to a beach. It’s a very steep hill and I am walking down. I am crossing path with some locals carrying lots of heavy looking black bin bags. They say hello. I answer and made a remark about the heavy bags. “We were collecting rubbish from the beach.” I thank them and found some wonderful sandy spots and some dirty spots full of plastic.

A friend asked to meet at the weekend, and we walk through the city wanting a coffee. “In or out?” the bartender asked. “In!” my friend says energetically. She didn’t bring her takeaway cup and we will get reusable cups from the bar if we stay in. Two cups less that can't be recycled.

At the supermarket, people are queuing to pay for their shopping. Lots of them are unpacking their own bags now as plastic bags cost 5p in the UK. Not much, but for the unorganised shopper, this might be 15p a week if you go shopping three times a week. Or you need more than one bag for shopping. Over the course of a year, you will get more than another pint of your favourite beer in the pub for that number of bags.

Lots of people feel they don’t have the power to change things and we might not be able to change everything. It is out of our remit. This doesn’t mean we can’t change anything at all. If we decide to do nothing, nothing will be the result. If I don’t vote and I am not happy with the result, I decided not to use my voice to do something about it. Yes, the results might still not be what you’d like to see but you tried.

You worked super hard and really deserved this holiday. A few days by the beach, or in the mountains. You breathe in deeply enjoying the fresh air and remove the rubbish that disturbs the lovely picture for Instagram. Maybe we can drop our rubbish always in a bin and not just when we have time off?

Yes, the things we do might be small, but they matter. Something matters. Doing something will change something. You don’t have to do it all. You just have to do something. Imagine a world where everyone does one thing. Imagine a world where everyone does one small thing for society, or for nature or for their family or any topic that is close to their heart.

What's your something?
